You’ve seen the show and you wonder if it can really be done? I have been teaching “extreme” couponing classes for over 3 years and my answer to that question is YES it can be done. If you have been following my blog for awhile you may have noticed that I take breaks here and there. I have written about it from time to time. I LOVE to save money and I LOVE to help YOU save money but I also LOVE my children and family so much and sometimes I can’t do it all at the same time so I take time to focus especially on my family, home and self every once in awhile. It is not always an easy decision I like blogging a LOT! I get a lot more instant complements and ego boosts with my blog and teaching classes than I do from folding laundry, cleaning bathrooms,  and carpooling to soccer games. However I want so badly to be the BEST mom I can be.  I never thought I would be a mother and to have three beautiful children, who are AMAZING, I feel so blessed! I find the greatest, most meaning ful gratification in my life comes when one of my kids gives me a sincere compliment or even a sweet hug and kiss. I know motherhood is THE most important job I will ever have and boy, is it going fast! My oldest turned 12, my 8 year old son is a busy cub scout,  and my baby is going to be 6 this year. It has really been hitting me hard how fast they are growing up and I admit I feel a little panicked!

When using our freezers as a stockpiling tool it is important to know how long food can be kept frozen in order to  help us better determine how much food to store in your freezer and be able to set realistic freezer storage goals.

How Long to Store Food

Because freezing keeps food safe almost indefinitely, recommended storage times are for quality only. Refer to the freezer storage which lists optimum freezing times for best quality.

If a food is not listed on the chart, you may determine its quality after thawing. First check the odor. Some foods will develop a rancid or off odor when frozen too long and should be discarded. Some may not look picture perfect or be of high enough quality to serve alone but may be edible; use them to make soups or stews. 

Freshness and quality at the time of freezing affect the condition of frozen foods. If frozen at peak quality, thawed foods emerge tasting better than foods frozen near the end of their useful life. So freeze items you won’t use quickly sooner rather than later. Store all foods at 0° F or lower to retain vitamin content, color, flavor and texture.  ( “Freezing and Food Safety” by the USDA)

Organizing

The next step to optimizing the freezer as a stockpile tool is to organize the freezer.  I like to have my freezer organized as much as possible to help me  rotate and use the food easier. I have a great upright freezer with plenty of shelves and two large pull out wire drawers. I store my meat products in the bottom of my freezer just in case it thaws without me realizing. The juices from the thawed meat would not contaminate the other foods in my freezer. I also keep things the kids can help with like juice, Popsicles, Go Gurts, and bread on a shelf where they can reach. I keep things like frozen meals, cookies, ice cream, my chocolate stash up high where the kids CAN’T see or reach!:) I use the door shelves to store items that are packaged small enough to fit and still be recognizable; IE: butter, shredded cheese, juice, bacon, sausage, etc… Another way to organize is to stack things. When I freeze bags of vegetables or meats like hamburger. I always lay them flat, let them freeze over night, then stack them on top of each other making sure to put the oldest on top so it will be used first.

A key to organization is mark when you put it in the freezer and if needs be when it would taste best used. You can use the chart above to help figure the use by dates. I have some other fun organization ideas that I will share with some of my later posts.
